The mounds were ABANDONED. There were absolutely no ant carcasses to be found AND here is the important point, mounds appeared nearby in short order where there were none before. For emphasis and clarity, I repeat, even at full strength, Orange Guard DID NOT KILL fire ants, it just made them move. If you want to kill fire ants in the most earth friendly way, use boiling water. You will see dead ants, and except for the energy burned boiling water, no possible harm to the earth. BTW, as far as the spinosad based products such as Conserve, although safer than probably all previous such products, studies on spinosad show slight toxicity to birds, moderate toxicity to fish, and slight to moderate toxicity to aquatic invertebrates. However, it is highly toxic to bees and is highly toxic to oysters and other marine mollusks. Again, boiling water (as a nod to Ray... Does it work? Absolutely. The trick is to spray enough to make them wet. They will die quickly. To keep them from coming back, the area must stay wet, don't wipe it up. When I first used this, I made the mistake of wiping it up after a few minutes as instructed and they always came back as soon as it was wiped up. Spray along the wall into the crevices where they are crawling in and they will not use that route to get in.Porous surfaces are the best places to use this. For example, ants were attacking the water in the water bottle of my hamsters' cage (it's hot outside). I put the cage on some chux pads (absorbant pad on one side and water repellent plastic on the other), sprayed all around the cage. The ants kept coming in looking for water, but they can't get to the cage. They are all over the desk where my cage sits, but the cage is ant-free. On more than one occasion, I've had an army full of ants in my dog's 5... I spray it everywhere-wood floors, upholstered furniture, on the rugs, animal sleeping spots, outside in the yard. It does make the floors slippery till it dries and after several uses can leave a sticky residue on linoleum or tile. No problem, just wash it off. Doesn't stain fabric (so far). BUT, I haven't seen it really kill fleas. I mean, I've put live fleas right in the stuff and they squirm around for ages and jump away if they can. Still, it definitely keeps the flea population down. Not as effective as a chemical spray, but it does work and isn't toxic. It says on the bottle not to use it directly on your pet, but I have, a bit diluted with water, with no ill effects. It doesn't make my cats drool and the dog doesn't mind it at all. It smells like oranges which may give some people a headache (my son complains about the smell). Overall, a good... Read more |
